This is a picture of my daughter’s classroom. As the new school year gets underway, you have to make sure that all of your students are on the same page. They have to feel like they are in the same place, that they can be part of the same school, the same classroom, and the same school spirit. They have to know that there are rules, that there are consequences, and that there are consequences for everything.

For some teachers, that means that you have to be particularly strict. For others, it means that you have to have a lot of flexibility. That means that you have to have a lot of flexibility in how you communicate what needs to be done. For parents, it means that you have to be willing to be flexible but also know what you are doing.

I have a little bit of the former in me. I like to have a lot of flexibility in how I communicate what needs to be done.
