To live in a world that is so rich in sensory information is a real challenge to many folks. For example, the way we move in a room or the way we interact with a workstation are so different from the way we interact with the outside world. We have to keep the environment in mind when we interact with it. This is a big part of being more mindful.
We often think that when we interact with the outside world, we are in control. But that isn’t how it works. Our surroundings have no control over us. The fact of the matter is, we are what we are in response to the environment that surrounds us. So the fact that we have to think about where our chairs are or how our desk is placed in relation to our legs in order to interact with a workstation is a distraction.
The idea of being aware of our surroundings is one of the most important aspects of mindfulness meditation practice. As a matter of fact, I don’t think it’s any more difficult to be mindful of your surroundings than it is to be mindful of your thoughts. I can’t think on my own. I have to be mindful of my surroundings. I have to be mindful of what I’m doing. I have to be mindful of who and what I’m interacting with.
When I say proprioceptively enriched environment, that might be a bit of a misnomer, because even the best environments aren’t truly just environments. They’re also environments that help us be aware of how our environment affects us. In the same way that a good environment is one that is friendly, safe, and comfortable for people to be in, a good environment is one that allows us to feel safe and comfortable to be in.
Proprioceptively enriched environments are those that are designed to help us have more self-awareness. Whether its for ourselves or for others, we are all just a bunch of cells, and each of us needs to be aware of our own thoughts and reactions to how our environment affects us so we can be more aware of how we impact others and ourselves.

When we think about our own thoughts and reactions to the environment, we usually feel bad. Because these thoughts and reactions are automatic and subconscious. However, when we design our environments to help someone have more awareness, we can actually do something about it. In this scene, Kirk and his crew encounter a planet that is not a planet but instead is a world that has become inhabited by a race of humanoid aliens. The crew members are surprised by a planet that seems almost like a regular planet that they can easily walk on. Kirk and his crew members then realize that this is because they have a proprioceptively enriched environment. The proprioceptively enriched environment is a way for their minds to be more aware of the place they are in.
This is a great example of how proprioceptively enriched environments are created. It’s not like it’s a bad thing that a planet feels like a regular planet they can walk on, but these kinds of environments are made to give them even more awareness of the space they’re in.
If you’re not already aware, proprioceptively enriched environments are a great way to get more comfortable in a virtual world. While there is no evidence the proprioceptively enriched environments are being used or tested on a large scale, the fact that they are are being built suggests they are in some way being used.
