The first step in doing any project is the planning stage. Now that we’ve decided what and how to do it, I want to discuss the more practical aspects of the operational environment.
I’m not going to talk about programming right now, but instead I’m going to discuss the more practical aspects of what it takes to do it well.
So lets start by looking at the big picture. The concept of the operational environment is something that has been around since the beginning of our society, but the term really only really gained much attention in the last century. In the early 1900s the idea of “operational” was applied to the ability of people to perform different activities with minimal human effort.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the term operational became more of a pejorative, referring to the work of the military that involved training and deployment of large numbers of men, often in the harsh environment of combat. During the 1980s, the term was applied to the work of the U.S. military in the field.
Military, police, and fire-fighters have a similar background to ours, and so we think of them as members of the “ops” category as well. They all have a lot of training, a lot of equipment, and a lot of authority. We see them as a group that we should be familiar with because they make our lives easier.

They are also expected to do things that we would consider very boring, like fire a weapon and hit an enemy target. In general, it is very hard to keep up with the changing tempo of the battlefield. It is also very hard to learn a new skill without being reminded of the skill that you already have.
In order to keep up with the changing tempo of the battlefield, you need to train your soldiers. Operational environment often includes multiple skills, so soldiers are often trained to do more than one action at a time.
Operational environments are not just about training soldiers for combat, they are also about training them for each other. They are one of the most important parts of a military organization.
