For example, in India, the government is trying to increase the number of people who can speak English to a point where 90% of the population can. Now, this is good news since it makes for an easier market for foreigners to buy up land in India and get their businesses off the ground. Unfortunately, this also means that the people in India are just as unaware of the changes around them as they were in the past.
This may not seem like a big deal, but it could be as big as it gets. Imagine a country that is 80 per cent, or even 90 per cent, English speaking. Imagine that 60 per cent of the population speaks languages other than English. Imagine that half of the people in the country don’t know English. Now, consider these new numbers: 60 per cent of the population speaks English. 60 per cent of the population speaks an other language besides English.
It’s easy to see how if this trend continues, the world would be a very different place. We would be unable to function, perhaps even die of starvation, because we wouldn’t be able to communicate with people who don’t even know English.
Globalization effects on environment are also the result of many more factors. There is a vast amount of inter-personal, economic, and cultural ties between different countries. As more and more people find themselves at the top of a pyramid, the barriers to communication and inter-connection fall away. People in different countries often speak different languages and learn different things. This change in the structure of society causes a similar effect that globalization has on environment.
For instance, a high-rise building in China has an effect on the environment because of its sheer size. In the US, it’s the same effect, but the difference is that the building is built on a hill that is lower than the average house in the US. This means that the air that blows over the top of the building is much colder and drier, which causes the surrounding landscape to be more arid and barren.
